Program Content

This program aims to foster the construction of a shared narrative for the history of Kosovo, addressing both peaceful and armed resistance, as well as the experiences of civilians during the 1990s.

Under the guidance of a museum guide, students are introduced to:

• The development of nationalisms in Yugoslavia after the death of Tito and the rise to power of Milošević;
• The repressive measures against Kosovo, the Trepça miners’ strike, and the illegal abrogation of Kosovo’s autonomy, guaranteed by the 1974 Constitution;
• Concrete examples of the exclusion of Albanians from public life, such as the closure of the official newspaper “Rilindja”, documented through photographs by Iljaz Bylykbashi.

The program also presents:

• How Kosovo Albanians organized themselves into a peaceful civil resistance movement under the leadership of Ibrahim Rugova, including the parallel system of home-school education;
• The transition to armed resistance from 1997, with film footage of the Serbian military attack on Prekaz and artifacts left from the house of Adem Jashari;
• Two animated children’s films about the expulsions and exodus of refugees during the NATO bombing;
• The return of hundreds of thousands of expelled Albanians and the violent aftermath of the post-war period.

The tour concludes with a film by Sami Mustafa, a Roma filmmaker from Pristina, documenting the life of the Roma community in the Plemetine refugee camp – the last such camp in Kosovo to exist until 2005.

The tour guides also present artworks from Mozambique, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania exhibited at the Reporting House.

Program Objective

Students learn that freedom, equality and solidarity were not taken for granted during the 1990s and will learn how society organized itself to resist repression. Through this program, they are directly confronted with issues related to human rights, democratic values ​​and current social realities.
